The Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) has ramped up its enforcement action to recover pending urban development taxes by sealing five properties in the Murlipura zone due to non-payment of dues. The JMC took this action on Friday and marks yet another move by the civic agency to improve compliance and collection of municipal taxes.

After the attachment, each of the five property holders cleared their dues immediately by paying a total of around ₹8 lakh in RTGS, cheques, and cash. This was facilitated by the fact that the Rajasthan Government has been offering an interest and penalty waiver scheme. This has shown defaulters the light to clear their dues.

As per. ET Realty, Pawan Kumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of the Murlipura zone, said the enforcement action yielded immediate results. “Property owners took advantage of the state government’s waiver on interest and penalties to clear their dues on the spot. This ensured transparency and prompt recovery, while reinforcing the importance of compliance,” he said.

The properties attached by the civic body are situated in Dev Nagar and include Plot No. 11 and Plot Nos. 1, 2, and 3 in Khasra Nos. 906 and 907; properties in Badarna; and properties in JA Colony and JS Colony near Shiv Shakti Misthan Bhandar on VKI Road No. 17. All these sites are in commercially and residentially active zones and need timely recovery of taxes to provide civic infrastructure.

Besides property seizure, the municipal corporation also sealed two marriage halls in JS Colony near Laxmi School on Road Number 17 for not paying dues regarding the mandatory registration fees. According to officials, such actions are part of plans to ensure that all establishments, whether residential or commercial, follow all rules and regulations as given by the municipal corporation.

“Properties of defaulters, whose owners fail to pay dues, shall be attached or sealed. Our aim is to ensure timely collection of taxes, financial stability of the corporation, and strict adherence to municipal rules,” added Sharma. The municipal body reiterated an aggressive crackdown on offenders, as reported.

The urban development tax is an important source of funds for urban bodies, providing them with the means to supply necessary civic services like maintenance and repairs to roads, sanitation, water supply, and upgrading the urban infrastructure. But the delay in payment and the incidence of taxes going unpaid have been a regular challenge to the urban bodies' finances. JMC has focused on inspections and zone-wise recovery efforts.

It was noted that the existing waiver regarding interest and penalties of taxes due has helped in accelerating collections, especially in conjunction with other grass-root measures such as attachments and sealing. It is stated that the civic body has called upon owners of properties with arrears of taxes to voluntarily pay their due before coercive action.

As Jaipur is observing a spate of urbanization, the municipal corporation has repeated that it is important to strictly follow tax and registration regulations to maintain development. The Murlipura crackdown, it was stated, is a strong signal that the municipal corporation will not be lenient towards those who are recalcitrant.
