The Bhopal Metro project is set to enter a crucial phase with the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) scheduled to begin inspections on September 24. The development comes as the city prepares for the commencement of metro passenger services, tentatively projected for October, subject to regulatory approval.
According to officials of Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL), the CMRS will carry out a detailed review of the Subhash Nagar Depot and rolling stock as part of the first stage of the process. This inspection will include facilities such as the control room, traction substation, repair bays, training centres, and maintenance units. The assessment will determine readiness for operations and compliance with prescribed safety standards.
Ahead of the inspection, MPMRCL managing director S Krishna Chaitanya visited the Subhash Nagar Depot on Thursday. His review covered technical facilities and ongoing works, and he directed project teams and contractors to finalise remaining tasks with priority. Officials confirmed that strict instructions were given to complete the finishing works while ensuring all safety and technical norms are adhered to before the CMRS review.
Following the depot and rolling stock evaluation, the CMRS is expected to shift focus to the Priority Corridor stations. These include AIIMS, DRM Office, and Subhash Nagar stations. The inspection will examine passenger amenities, platform safety measures, signalling systems, and emergency response arrangements. Officials highlighted that these checks are essential for certifying the network’s readiness for public use.
The upcoming inspection represents one of the final regulatory requirements before the Bhopal Metro can commence operations. Once the CMRS completes the review and grants authorisation, the project will be cleared for passenger services. The launch of the metro is being seen as a major step in strengthening the city’s public transport network, reducing congestion, and improving connectivity.
The Bhopal Metro project has been progressing in phases, with the Priority Corridor being the first to be readied for use. The corridor, covering key stretches and important destinations, is designed to serve as the foundation for future network expansion. Officials note that timely completion of the safety review and subsequent approvals will enable the long-awaited inauguration of metro services in the state capital.
