Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), the parent company of the Taj HoteLS Group, has signed a deal to develop a 232-room Gateway Hotel in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. The gateway project will be a greenfield development on the Yamuna Expressway in collaboration with Raj Kailash Hospitality LLP.
The proposed hotel adds to IHCL’s expansion in Uttar Pradesh, where its portfolio will comprise 64 hotels, including 27 under development. The signing also brings a new hospitality project to Agra, a city known for its tourism market and undergoing wider infrastructure and urban development.

New Gateway Hotel Planned Along Yamuna Expressway

The hotel will be situated along Yamuna Expressway. This project is a greenfield development, implying that it will involve the construction of a new property and not renovating an existing hotel.
Agra is part of the Golden Triangle tourist circuit, which connects the city with Delhi and Jaipur. The city’s monuments, particularly the Taj Mahal, draws in a large number of domestic as well as international tourists. The new hotel will add to the city’s supply of branded accommodation once its completed and becomes operational.
IHCL has not announced a construction timeline or opening date for the property. Details such as the project cost and the expected investment has also not been disclosed.

Hotel to Include Dining and Event Facilities

The property is planned to provide an all-day dining restaurant, a specialty restaurant and a bar. Facilities will also comprise a gym and swimming pool. The hotel is expected to possess banquet halls, a conference room and meeting rooms for business gatherings, weddings and social events. These facilities suggest that the property is being planned to cater to leisure travellers as well as the guests attending meetings and functions.
The development will operate under IHCL’s Gateway brand, which offers full-service hotels. The planned combination of accommodation, dining and event spaces will add another hospitality option in Agra, although the project’s opening schedule has not yet been made public.

Agra's Growth Extends Beyond Tourism

IHCL has pointed to infrastructure development, new townships and upcoming IT parks as factors contributing to Agra’s growth as an urban centre. The company sees the city’s appeal extending beyond its established tourism market.
The proposed hotel’s location along the Yamuna Expressway places it within a wider transport corridor, while its planned meeting and banquet facilities could serve visitors travelling for business and events. However, the company has not provided estimates for the share of demand expected from these segments or quantified the project’s likely economic impact.
For the real estate and hospitality sectors, the signing represents a planned addition to Agra’s hotel supply. Its eventual contribution will depend on the project’s development and the demand it attracts after opening.

IHCL's Uttar Pradesh Portfolio to Include 64 Hotels

With the addition of Gateway Agra, IHCL's hotel inventory in Uttar Pradesh will now include 64 properties, comprising 27 that are in the development phase. The company is ramping up its footprint in the state by embarking on new hotel projects. Its earlier partnership with the Clarks Group of Hotels in Agra is another example of its hotel-related activity in the city.
The Agra development is being undertaken with Raj Kailash Hospitality LLP, which has interests in hospitality, real estate and tourism infrastructure. The partnership brings the Gateway brand to the city and adds another project to IHCL’s development pipeline.
The agreement marks the signing of a new hotel project, rather than the opening of an operational property. Further details on construction, investment and the expected launch have not been announced.
