From a young age, Murali was inspired by the idea of serving the nation. His family recalls how he adored the Army uniform and dreamt of becoming a soldier.

In December 2022, his dream turned into reality when he was inducted into the Indian Army. His posting to Jammu and Kashmir was a source of both pride and anxiety for his family. “He was always motivated, proud to be in uniform, and deeply patriotic,” his father told The Indian Express. Despite coming from a humble background, Murali stood tall as a symbol of courage and resilience.

A Final Call and Unspoken Fears

Just a day before his death, Murali had called his family to speak about the worsening situation along the LoC. According to his cousin Ranjit, he called on May 6, warning about increased gunfire from across the border. “He called again the next night and said the firing had intensified. He was worried about his parents’ safety,” said Ranjit. “I told him to take care of himself, and we’d take care of his family.”

This concern, they noted, was uncharacteristic of Murali, who usually remained composed. His family now looks back at those calls with pain, realizing they may have been his last words of reassurance.

The Ultimate Sacrifice

In the early hours of Friday morning, the Naik family received devastating news. A senior Army officer called between 3 and 3:30 am, informing Murali’s mother that he had been critically injured in a fierce exchange of fire with Pakistani forces and succumbed to his injuries during evacuation.

The soldier’s body could not be airlifted in time to Delhi for emergency treatment. Despite best efforts, Murali died fighting at the border — fulfilling the very duty he always dreamed of.

An Outpouring of Grief and Tribute

As news of his martyrdom spread, hundreds from nearby villages came to his home to pay their respects. Political leaders, civil officials, and local police visited the grieving family. A local officer told The News Minute: “We salute Murali Naik’s bravery and dedication. His sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu took to social media platform X to express his condolences. “It is saddening to hear of the loss of a soldier named Murali Nayak from Gorantla Mandal, Penukonda Assembly Constituency, Sri Sathya Sai district, in the defence of the country. Tributes to the martyr Murali Nayak, who laid down his life for the nation. I express my deepest condolences to his family members.”

Governor S Abdul Nazeer and former CM Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy also shared heartfelt tributes. The Chief Minister is expected to visit the village and announce ex gratia relief for the bereaved family.

Ongoing Tensions Along the LoC

Murali Naik’s death comes amid a spike in cross-border hostilities. According to a statement by the Defence Ministry, Pakistani forces have been engaging in heavy shelling across multiple sectors along the LoC, including Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, and Akhnoor.

The Poonch region has witnessed some of the worst attacks, with at least 16 civilian deaths and 59 injuries reported in recent weeks. The situation remains extremely volatile, with the Indian Army responding to unprovoked aggression.

Adding to the toll, Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar, a 32-year-old soldier from Palwal district, Haryana, was also killed during the recent escalation.

These fresh clashes erupted after India launched precision strikes on nine terror camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. These strikes were retaliation for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, in which 26 civilians, mostly tourists, were killed — marking one of the deadliest terror strikes in recent times.
