Hyderabad,‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ is about to undergo a major change after the Telangana state government green-lit the merger of 27 surrounding local bodies with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). This merger has made Hyderabad the biggest metropolitan city in India, as the city has outgrown other metro areas not only in terms of its population but also its geographic size.

The impact of this move is not just about the expansion of the boundaries of the city but also about the enhancement of its economic and technological potential as one of the fastest-growing hubs of these sectors in the country. It is estimated that the overall population of the metro area will increase from the currently figure of 1.85 crore once the municipalities that are newly added will have completed their integration into the administrative framework of GHMC. By far, the most important step in the journey of Hyderabad toward becoming a global city is the expansion. T

his large urban area enables the implementation of strategic planning, consolidating the governance structure, and speeding up the infrastructural development of a previously divided administrative sector. Collaborating in urban planning, transportation, sanitation, and public service delivery are some of the improvements that the integration will bring, as per the statements of the state officials.

The merger is going to have an impact not only on the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) but also on the Hyderabad Metropolitan Region (HMR) that is getting ready to fight for its place among the top global centers of IT, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, business services, and innovation.

Huge infrastructure plans laid out

In order to maintain a consistent development level throughout the expanded areas, large-scale infrastructure projects can already be seen as the state government's next move. Among these are:

-Roads that are broader and improved so that the growing vehicular traffic can be accommodated

-Transport systems that are in a position to meet the demands of the users, including bus routes and metro ridership supplemented by attractive and efficient services

-Waste accompanied with a scientific processing method is being targeted for improvement

-Drainage systems are improved to lessen the risk of floods and waterlogging

-Good and safe city requirements like parks, streetlighting and community centers

The officials claimed that development funds would be made available to all the newly added neighborhoods so that there would be no rundown areas and that residents living on the periphery would be provided with the same level of civic infrastructure as those in the center of Hyderabad.

A thriving economy and tech ecosystem

The exponential growth of the economy of Hyderabad has, in fact, been the major force behind its expansion. Today, it is a city that hosts several globally leading technology companies, has rapidly growing industrial zones, and boasts a vibrant startup ecosystem. The GHMC jurisdiction, which has been enlarged, will, therefore, be an excellent place where further investment will come in, economic activities will be consolidated, and urban growth will be sustained over the long term.

The government is optimistic that the mitigation of governance challenges over a greater area will have a positive effect on urban management, cutting administrative delays, and improving business facilitation.

Due to its expanded civic boundary, strong economic activities, and a sizable population base, Hyderabad is well-positioned to become a global urban conglomerate and shape the future in its own way. The next few years will, however, determine the city's ability to strike a balance between the rapid growth and sustainability, as well as inclusion of the development. Officials are of the view that the effective doing of the planned infrastructure work will be a barometer of how well Hyderabad is able to play its new role as the biggest, and perhaps most powerful, urban center in ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌India.
