Indian Railways has approved two projects worth Rs. 990 crore in Maharashtra to augment rail capacity and improve passenger and freight train operations. The first project will be worth Rs 497 crore and will see the doubling of the 10.86-km Chouk-Karjat section of Central Railway. This will free up capacity on the route and enable faster and more efficient traveling.
The second project, costing Rs 493 crore, will see the laying of a new 38.21-km line to connect Mukutban with Gadchandur. The new line will be linked with the existing rail routes in Yavatmal and Chandrapur districts and is expected to add to the number of rail routes in the region.

Chouk-Karjat doubling to add more trains

The Rs 497 crore project funds the doubling of the existing single line Chouk-Karjat section on the Panvel-Chouk-Karjat route. The 10.86 km long rail route is currently shared by both goods and passenger trains. It is crucial to have more capacity for running trains on this route. Once completed, the doubled section is expected to allow five additional passenger trains to run in each direction every day. It will also support an additional 18.35 million tonnes of freight traffic annually and help reduce the detention of freight trains.
The project is part of a wider railway infrastructure programme focused on expanding capacity through line doubling, tripling, quadrupling and other measures. For the Chouk-Karjat section, adding a second line will allow passenger and freight services to be handled with greater operational flexibility.
The route also forms part of the wider rail network serving the Mumbai region, making capacity improvements relevant to both passenger movement and goods traffic.

New line to connect Maharashtra’s industrial belt

The second project involves a Rs. 493 crore investment in a new 38.21-km railway line between Mukutban in Yavatmal district and Gadchandur in Chandrapur district.
The line is expected to improve rail access to industrial and mining centres in the region, including cement plants, coal mines operated by Western Coalfields Ltd and limestone mines.it is likely to handle around 6.08 million tonnes traffic of freight like coal, cement, iron and steel, fertilisers and foodgrains.
The new connection would provide an alternate route to the existing Wardha-Manikgarh section. This would help in traffic distribution in the network. A shorter route for freight traffic is likely to cut down the distance and time for some of the consignments, resulting in savings in transportation cost.
Besides, two MEMU passenger services in each direction are also proposed to be started from the new line after its commissioning.

Rail links to support industrial and regional movement

The Mukutban-Gadchandur project has a particularly strong freight focus because of the industrial activity along the route. India is also expanding freight rail infrastructure to improve logistics and industrial connectivity across major corridors. Better rail access can help move raw materials to manufacturing units and finished products to markets, while also providing another route for freight traffic currently using existing corridors.
The project will also strengthen connections between the industrial areas and the Majri-Nanded route. This could improve freight access towards parts of Maharashtra and neighbouring regions, including Karnataka.
For real estate and regional development, such infrastructure is relevant because transport connectivity is one of the factors that supports the movement of workers, businesses and goods. However, the impact on surrounding property markets will depend on wider industrial activity, employment growth and development around the improved corridors.

Maharashtra adds rail capacity as traffic grows

The two projects together cover nearly 49 km of railway infrastructure and differ in their capacity requirements. While the Chouk-Karjat project aims to increase the capacity of an existing passenger and freight corridor, the Mukutban-Gadchandur line adds a new route that serves industrial and mining areas.
The approvals come as Indian Railways continues to focus on expanding capacity across its network's congested sections. For 2026-27, the Railways has targeted to construct 500 km of new lines and doubling 2,400 km of existing lines.
In Maharashtra, the Rs. 990 crore investment will thus add both passenger and freight capacity, as well as enhance connectivity to existing rail corridors and industrial zones.
The eventual regional impact will depend on how quickly the projects are executed and how surrounding economic activity develops alongside the new and upgraded rail links.
