Gauhati University is set for a major expansion of its campus infrastructure, with Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan laying the foundation stone for projects worth Rs. 110 crore on September 7.
The first phase of infrastructure development includes a new multidisciplinary academic building, hostels for boys and international students, and upgrades to existing campus facilities. The projects have been approved by the Assam Cabinet and are targeted at strengthening the academic and other infrastructure facilities of the university.
The foundation stone was laid by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, Gauhati University Vice-Chancellor Nani Gopal Mahanta and other senior officials.
What is included in Gauhati University's Rs. 110 crore infrastructure project?
The development package covers both new construction and upgrades to existing facilities across the university campus. The key components include a new multidisciplinary academic building, a boys' hostel and a hostel dedicated to international students.
| Amount Spent | Project | The Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| ₹3,030 crore | Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu | Connects Guwahati with North Guwahati; six-lane bridge; could reduce travel time to about 7 minutes |
| ₹555 crore | IIM Guwahati | Strengthens higher education and management education infrastructure in the Northeast |
| ₹348 crore | National Data Centre for North-Eastern Region | Strengthens digital/ICT infrastructure and supports delivery of digital government services |

The project also includes a modern mess building, renovation of the Krishna Kanta Handique Library-seminar hall and upgradation of the Birinchi Barua Auditorium.
Residential quarters for D-Grade staff are also part of the infrastructure package. The projects therefore include academic facilities, student accommodation, campus amenities and staff housing rather than being limited to a single building.
The addition of an international students' hostel will provide a residential infrastructure solely for students from overseas, while the new boys hostel will add to the university's existing student accommodation capacity.
Project forms part of first phase of Gauhati University's infrastructure expansion
The Rs. 110 crore development is part of the first phase of infrastructure development planned for Gauhati University.
It is reported that the project had been approved earlier by the Assam Cabinet and is intended to expand the university's academic infrastructure. The focus on a multidisciplinary academic building, alongside hostel and campus-facility upgrades, indicates that the current phase combines teaching infrastructure with facilities needed to support students and campus operations.
Therefore, the foundation-laying ceremony marks the beginning of implementation for a package covering several parts of the university's physical infrastructure.
Gauhati University expands facilities as academic and research activities grow
The infrastructure development comes against the backdrop of Gauhati University's broader academic and research activities.
The university has introduced technical courses related to the semiconductor industry and set up labs in the areas of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and machine learning. It has also set up the GU-TERI Centre for Himalayan Studies which focuses on studies relating to climate change.
The Vice-President also highlighted the university's research in areas including the Brahmaputra Basin, endangered languages, multilingualism, women's studies, environmental sustainability and Indian Knowledge Systems.
Radhakrishnan described the Brahmaputra as an ecological, economic and civilisational force and focused on the importance of research addressing regional as well as national challenges.
The new infrastructure will add physical capacity to an institution that is expanding across multiple academic and research areas.
Gauhati University holds a key position in Northeast India's higher education system
Gauhati University, which was established on 26th January 1948, is the oldest university in northeastern India. It has grown to be one of the leading institutions in the area. According to the report released by the Vice President's Secretariat, Gauhati University has been accorded an A+ accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), ranking 9th in the NIRF 2025 amongst the state public universities.
Additionally, Radhakrishnan praised Gauhati University for its pioneering role in preserving the linguistic heritage of India, and he also highlighted the academic and literary ties between Assam and Tamil Nadu.
Infrastructure push extends beyond the current project
The Rs. 110 crore package represents the infrastructure projects for which the foundation stone was laid during the Vice-President's visit. The university's broader development will continue through additional projects and proposals in the future.
The current phase incorporates a new academic building, student hostels, library and auditorium, a modern mess and staff quarters. The Gauhati University, thus, entails a significant enhancement in the infrastructure relating to academic activities, hostel facilities and to the overall maintenance of the campus.
